HONG KONG – Thursday is the deadline for real-name registration for existing pre-paid subscriber identity module (SIM) cards, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has said, warning that the SIM cards will be deactivated for failure to complete the registration within the deadline.

Responding to the government's request, the city’s telecommunications service providers have already sent out final SMS notification reminders to users of the unregistered SIM cards.

“Users can complete the registration within today via the hyperlink in the SMS or through the websites or mobile applications of their respective telecommunications service providers,” the government said in a notification on Thursday morning.

They should follow the instructions to provide information on the Hong Kong identity card – including Chinese and English names, date of birth, Hong Kong identity card number, and a copy of the identity card to complete the registration.

The 18 designated post offices with service counters for real-name registration will extend service hours to 7 pm Thursday to facilitate the real-name registration.
