HONG KONG — Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun — former director-general of the World Health Organization and a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference — on Friday praised the newly released election manifesto of chief executive candidate John Lee Ka-chiu.

Chan said Lee’s manifesto demonstrated that he is a pragmatic, down-to-earth person with vision and accountability.

Chan’s remarks came after Lee earlier that day unveiled his election manifesto, which highlighted four key areas: improving governance, boosting land and housing, enhancing competitiveness, and building a caring society in which young people are able to move up the social ladder.

The manifesto has put the spotlight on issues concerning people’s livelihoods and the consolidation of the city’s strengths in finance and in technology and innovation, Chan said.

In his manifesto, Lee said the city should actively participate in the nation’s development, especially the country’s dual circulation strategy, to give full play to the city’s competitive edge, she said.

She also expressed confidence that Lee will form a loyal and patriotic governing team that loves the city and answers to the city’s residents, as well as one that will push forward legislation related to Article 23 of the Basic Law. Chan said this will create a stable development environment for the city.
