Editor’s note:

In Hong Kong’s past 25 years, the central government’s support has played an indispensable role in safeguarding its development. In the last decade, the special administrative region has also pulled at the heartstrings of President Xi Jinping. In this series report, we invited Hong Kong residents who have come into close contact with Xi to share their stories with the State leader in a first-person perspective, and also reveal Xi’s profound impact on Hong Kong’s latest developments.

Reflecting the importance he attaches to Hong Kong youth, President Xi Jinping visited the Permanent Activity Center of Junior Police Call on June 30, 2017. Some JPC members later drew a Spring Festival greeting card and sent it to Xi. They received the president’s reply in 2018.

Kenneth Kwok Ka-chuen, assistant commissioner of the Hong Kong Police Force, has been administering JPC as part of his duties.  He told China Daily that Xi’s visit has brought greater attention and more resources to the JPC, and vowed to make good use of the resources to nurture young leaders and meet Xi’s expectations.

When President Xi Jinping visited Hong Kong five years ago, I was serving as District Commander of Airport District of the Hong Kong Police Force, responsible for the president’s security on his arrival in the special administrative region and departure from the city. Although I wasn’t in a position to make contact with Xi, I could sense his amiability and graciousness when he emerged from the aircraft on the apron at Hong Kong International Airport.

Xi’s arrival speech at the airport enabled me to feel his care for and understanding of Hong Kong. This was demonstrated during the president’s visit to the JPC Permanent Activity Centre of which I am in charge.  Xi said Hong Kong’s youth are the future of society, and each generation has its unique historical opportunities. Xi interacted with the young JPC members, shaking hands with them and listening to their views.

I also want to be part of the youth-nurturing course so that Hong Kong will have more young leaders to advance its development.  I hope to help Hong Kong’s young people make the most of the opportunities available to serve the community.

I’m well aware of the president's expectations of Hong Kong youth. I’ll try my best to make good use of the resources from all sectors, helping Hong Kong youth to know more about themselves, and nurturing more young leaders to help in the community’s development.

I also want to be part of the youth-nurturing course so that Hong Kong will have more young leaders to advance its development.  I hope to help Hong Kong’s young people make the most of the opportunities available to serve the community.

With the support of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, we’ve conducted various activities to help our members strengthen connections with the Chinese mainland. Many of our members had toured cities on the mainland on exchange visits and volunteered for major sports events there. The liaison office has also provided us with many books and materials on the nation’s historical development and hosted screenings of films to give young people a better understanding of the country.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the central government, under the president’s leadership, has given Hong Kong a lot of support, such as sending supplies, vaccines and medical teams to the SAR, playing a crucial role in ensuring a steady supply of essential materials.

JPC members have helped to pack up these supplies to distribute them to residents. We want to let them know that the nation’s support has enabled Hong Kong to solve its difficulties.

The pandemic has resulted in many activities co-organized by the JPC and the Liaison Office being suspended. I hope that when normal travel with the Chinese mainland resumes, we can continue sending   JPC members to the mainland on exchange visits relating to areas like science and technology, sports and culture.
