John Lee Ka-chiu said on Friday that he will meet with the media on Saturday to inform the public of his next move. 

The announcement came the day after the central government approved his resignation as Hong Kong chief secretary, paving way for him to run for the city’s top job.

In a short briefing with the media, Lee thanked the people of Hong Kong for giving him the opportunity to serve the city for 45 years. 

Lee said he had served in many different positions in that time, which provided him a lot of valuable experience, knowledge and ability, and it also broadened his vision. 

“I shall continue this passion to proceed on the way I should be proceeding,” Lee said. 

On Wednesday, Lee tendered his resignation and told the public that he plans to run for the city’s top job in the election scheduled for May 8.

Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday that the State Council accepted Lee’s resignation in accordance with Hong Kong’s Basic Law, and based on the suggestion of Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor
