Three of the seven Hong Kong contestants in the “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition in Chengdu, Sichuan province, have advanced to the final day of competition on Wednesday.

The competition includes a prepared speech, an impromptu speech, and a Q&A session with the judging panel

On Tuesday, Isabelle Ho Yan-ching from St. Paul’s Co-educational College secured her place in the final of the Senior Secondary category. She will deliver a prepared speech on “History as a mirror”.

On Monday, two other Hong Kong contestants in the Junior Secondary category booked their tickets for the final.

Initiated by China Daily, the national competition has attracted more than 500 students this year. It started on Sunday and will end on Wednesday. Because of the pandemic, Hong Kong speakers took part via video conferencing.

The competition includes a prepared speech, an impromptu speech, and a Q&A session with the judging panel. Topics of the prepared speeches include “The bravest person in my eye”, “Things I wish to say to the Party”, and “Protecting the blue planet”.

An awards ceremony will be held Wednesday afternoon to recognize the outstanding performances of students in all categories.
