HONG KONG – Hong Kong reported 2,995 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, a slight increase from Friday's 2,945 infections.

Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the communicable disease branch of the Centre for Health Protection, said in a news briefing that the new cases comprised 2,791 local infections and 204 imported cases.

Among the imported cases, 56 came from the United Kingdom, 20 from Singapore, 17 from Thailand, and 15 each from the United States and Canada, Chuang said.

Saturday's new additions brought the city's infection tally during the fifth wave to 1,255,431.

No new death was reported on Saturday as the city's COVID-19 death toll during the fifth wave stood at 9,197.

Chuang added that a staff member of Chi Yun School in To Kwa Wan was confirmed infected and 13 students of the special education school were put under quarantine.

Larry Lee, chief manager (Integrated Clinical Services) of the Hospital Authority, said at the same briefing that 893 COVID-19 patients were being treated in public hospitals as of Saturday, including 144 new patients. Eighteen of them were in critical condition, including four receiving intensive care, while 22 were in serious condition.  

He added that the number of patients in critical and serious condition has remain stable recently.
