HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s health authorities on Saturday reported 5,427 new coronavirus infections and eight related deaths.

Three male patients aged 66 to 89 in a rehabilitation ward of the Kowloon Hospital have tested positive for COVID-19 since Oct 26, the Hospital Authority said

The new cases included 5,011 locally acquired infections and 372 imported ones, according to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health.

Of the imported cases, 211 tested positive at the Hong Kong International Airport, 86 during days 1 to 3, and the remaining 75 from days 4 to 7.

The center also said that the health authorities have identified 202 cases of sub-lineage XBB, six of XBD, eight of BA.2.75.2, six of BA.4.6, 11 of BF.7 and 22 of BQ.1.1 among the imported cases. 

Six cases of sub-lineage XBD, one of BA.2.75.2 and seven of BQ.1.1 have also been detected among the local cases.

With Saturday’s eight new deaths, Hong Kong’s COVID death toll reached 10,160 during this latest wave of the pandemic, and 10,373 since the beginning of the pandemic, the center added. 

The city reported total 5,656 daily coronavirus infections on Friday and 6,062 on Thursday.

Meanwhile, there were 1,934 COVID patients receiving treatment at public hospitals, including 217 new admissions, 183 requiring oxygen therapy, and nine needing ventilator support, the Hospital Authority said in a separate statement.

Total 39 COVID patients were in serious condition and 32 in critical condition, which included 10 under intensive care.

Admission and visiting arrangements for the ward concerned have been suspended, it said.
