HONG KONG – A fire broke out on a power cable bridge in Yuen Long, western New Territories, on Tuesday evening, forcing early closure of leisure and cultural facilities.

The Fire Services Department was conducting a firefighting operation after the fire originated at Kwong Yip Street at 7:12pm, according to a government press release issued after 9 pm.

"As power suspension may occur in the affected area, members of the public should avoid taking lifts,” the release reads.

The government advised members of the public who are being affected by the smoke and an unusual odor carried by the wind to close their doors and windows and stay calm.

Due to the electricity supply problem in Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai areas, many venues of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department were closed early for the night.

Several sports centers, squash courts, tennis courts, swimming pools, theater and students’ study rooms were among them, including Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai swimming pools; Ping Shan Tin Shui Wai, Tin Shui, Tin Shui Wai, Tin Fai Road sports centers; and Yuen Long Theatre.
