HONG KONG – The number of new COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong fell for the fifth straight day to 4,418 infections on Tuesday.

Of the imported cases, 284 were detected at the airport, 107 tested positive during Day 1 to Day 3, and the remaining 46 between Days 4 and 7

The new cases included 3,981 local infections and 437 imported cases, according to a statement by the Centre for Health Protection. Thirteen reported deaths brought the city’s tally during the fifth wave of infections to 10,197.

Of the imported cases, 284 were detected at the airport, 107 tested positive during Day 1 to Day 3, and the remaining 46 between Days 4 and 7.

The Public Health Laboratory Services Branch has identified a total of 204 cases of sub-lineage XBB, six of XBD, eight of BA.2.75.2, six of BA.4.6, 11 of BF.7 and 23 of BQ.1.1 among the imported cases. Two cases of sub-lineage XBB, seven of XBD, one of BA.2.75.2 and eight of BQ.1.1 were also found among local cases.

Meanwhile, the government also said that six residential care homes for the elderly and people with disabilities reported 11 infections, with a total of 44 residents listed as close contacts.

The CHP also said that 442 schools had 632 students and 120 staff members testing positive for the virus. Ten schools had to suspend 11 in-person classes for one week due to infections.
