HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s Chief Secretary for Administration John Lee Ka-chiu on Friday called on electoral staff to devote their full strength to ensure a smooth Legislative Council election on Sunday.

Lee made the remarks as he visited the central counting station at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang Kwok-wai.

Speaking to the election personnel onsite, Lee said the upcoming election is the largest in scale in Hong Kong's history. “A record high of some 40,000 electoral staff will carry out duties related to polling and counting procedures,” he said.

To enable this election to be conducted smoothly, he called on electoral staff to be committed to work, familiarize themselves with the procedures, and be flexible and adaptive to changes.

“I call on every colleague to be diligent and devote your full strength to help the government to run this historic election for Hong Kong," he added.

The LegCo poll is the second important election after the improvement of the city’s electoral system. Lee noted the election marks an important milestone in improving Hong Kong’s electoral system and was of great significance.

Some 4.4 million eligible voters will elect 90 LegCo members, who will fulfill the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong", and be committed to the interests of national development and the long-term prosperity of the city, Lee said.
