HONG KONG – The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has strongly condemned attempts by politicians of the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China to impose so-called "sanctions" on prosecutors of the Department of Justice of Hong Kong.

In a statement issued on Thursday, a spokesperson for the HKSAR government said prosecutors in Hong Kong have been fulfilling their duties independently and impartially.

My colleagues and I continue to stay united in discharging our constitutional duties without fear or favor.

“Hong Kong is governed by the rule of law where laws must be observed and lawbreakers held to account,” the spokesman said, adding that no one is above the law.

Cases will not be handled differently based on the political beliefs or background of those involved, according to the spokesman.

The spokesman said that safeguarding national security is an internal matter of sovereign jurisdiction, and hence the implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong should not be subject to any form of interference.

“The US’ arbitrary and unreasonable bullying act has demonstrated disrespect for the rule of law, seriously violated international norms and grossly interfered in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs at large,” the spokesman added.

Secretary for Justice Paul Lam Ting-kwok said any unscrupulous attempt to pressure Hong Kong prosecutors will be futile.

“My colleagues and I continue to stay united in discharging our constitutional duties without fear or favor,” Lam was quoted as saying in the same statement.
