HONG KONG – Hong Kong and Macao residents can apply for Shenzhen’s social security services from Dec 2 without leaving the special administrative regions, marking another milestone in deepening integration between the Chinese mainland and the two SARs.

They will be able to register for the mainland city’s social security program at designated Bank of China Hong Kong branches, freeing them from having to travel across the border to deal with the matter.

The new services target three groups – Hong Kong and Macao residents who are employed in Shenzhen; working-age self-employed Hong Kong and Macao residents or those who work on a flexible employment basis in Shenzhen; and unemployed Hong Kong and Macao residents aged between 16 and 60 who have effective residence permits in Shenzhen.

Qualified applicants who have registered successfully will be entitled to the same services as their mainland counterparts.

At the present time, there are more than 30,000 people from Hong Kong and Macao who are taking part in a workers’ endowment insurance program in Shenzhen.
