HONG KONG – A second person has died due to the taxi crash in Tai Po on Sunday.

Local media reported that a 63-year-old woman died at the Tuen Mun Hospital on Monday morning. She had sustained multiple injuries and was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state. A four-year-old boy remains in critical condition while a pregnant woman is in serious condition.

A 59-year-old man died earlier on the spot when a red taxi drove into a group of people on a pedestrian island on Kwong Fuk Road in Tai Po, injuring nine other persons.

The incident happened at about 11:21 am Sunday when the taxi driven by a 63-year-old man was travelling westbound along the road, police said.

While approaching 102 Kwong Fuk Road, the taxi ploughed into the pedestrians who were crossing the road.The driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and is being detained for enquiries. He felt unwell and was sent to Prince of Wales Hospital, police said.

A 51-year-old woman and a 37-year-old woman were also brought to the Prince of Wales Hospital after they sustained multiple injuries while a 49-year-old man refused medical attention, police added.

The Special Investigation Team of Traffic, New Territories North is conducting an investigation.

In a statement on Sunday, Secretary for Transport and Housing Frank Chan Fan said he was deeply saddened by the accident and extended his sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and the injured, and wished the injured speedy recovery.

He said relevant government departments have followed up and rendered assistance to the families of the victims.
