The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on Thursday announced it was setting up a new inno-tech research institute in the city of Wuxi in a bid to participate and contribute to the nation’s information and technology development. 

The PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute is expected to foster I&T collaboration between government, industry, academia and research institutions by providing an advanced research platform, a unique engineering doctorate program, and incubation support backed by a robust local manufacturing sector.

The university on Thursday reached a 5-year cooperation agreement with the government of Wuxi, Jiangsu province. 

PolyU has been actively engaged in strategic technology and innovation research cooperation with Jiangsu, and we are committed to contributing to the development of talents as well as innovation and technology research.

The agreement was signed by Christopher Chao, vice-president (research and innovation) of PolyU, and Zhang Jinwei, head of Xinwu district, Wuxi, in a video conference.  

Council Chairman of PolyU Lam Tai-fai and President of PolyU Teng Jin-guang witnessed the signing ceremony, together with Du Xiaogang, Communist Party secretary of Wuxi, and Zhao Jianjun, deputy Party secretary and mayor of Wuxi.

“Jiangsu province is an important province in the Yangtze River Delta region, and Wuxi enjoys a strong reputation for its comprehensive industrial development. PolyU has been actively engaged in strategic technology and innovation research cooperation with Jiangsu, and we are committed to contributing to the development of talents as well as innovation and technology research,” said Lam. 

Teng said, “PolyU and the Wuxi government share a common vision for the future: we both strive to strengthen our cooperation in the cultivation of high-quality professionals and advanced technological innovation, ultimately contributing to the economic development of Wuxi, Jiangsu and the nation.” 

Zhao said, “The successful establishment of the PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute marks another important partnership between the ‘Pearl of Taihu’ and the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, which is a strong impetus for the further development of cooperation among Suzhou, Hong Kong and Macao … together we will work to create a new benchmark for government-academia cooperation between the Yangtze River Delta and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.” 

Wuxi has deep bonds with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Hong Kong is the largest trading partner and source of foreign domestic investment in Wuxi. Hong Kong firms have invested in a total of 5,674 business projects in Wuxi, with a cumulative value of $131.05 billion. Last year, the import and export trade value between the two cities  reached $6.32 billion, a 12.6 percent year-on-year growth. Twenty companies from Wuxi have listed in Hong Kong, accounting for 67 percent of the city’s companies that are listed outside the Chinese mainland.
