HONG KONG – Hong Kong karate athlete Grace Lau Mo-sheung has won the bronze medal in the Women's Kata event at the World Games 2022, the territory's first medal in this year's games.

Sandra Sánchez of Spain took gold while Japan’s Hikaru Ono claimed silver.

Having achieved outstanding performance in a number of international sports competitions in recent years, Grace has excelled again at The World Games 2022 this time and won a bronze medal.

Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung extended his congratulations to Lau in a statement issued on Saturday.

“Having achieved outstanding performance in a number of international sports competitions in recent years, Grace has excelled again at The World Games 2022 this time and won a bronze medal,” Yeung said.

“We share her joy and take pride in her,” he added. 

He said he also wishes Hong Kong athletes remarkable performance in the other matches of The World Games.

The 30-year-old Lau made history by clinching Hong Kong's first medal in karate in the Olympic Games in August last year.

The World Games 2022 in Alabama, the US features 33 events. A total of 17 athletes from Hong Kong take part in this year's games, competing in eight events.
