The poor health of An An has Hong Kong residents concerned, with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu calling on the city on Thursday to wish the giant panda a speedy recovery.

According to the social media account of Ocean Park Hong Kong, An An — one of the two giant pandas the central government gave to Hong Kong in 1999 to mark the second anniversary of the city’s return to the motherland — has had a poor appetite and been out of spirits for the past two weeks, unable to see park visitors.

Lee said on his social media account that he is worried and cares a lot about the giant panda’s health, and that the government has been in contact with the park about the situation.

Lee called on residents to send out their blessings to help An An get back on his feet.

Peter Ho, a 53-year-old local resident, said that while he is disappointed about An An’s absence at the park, he is more concerned about the panda’s health.

“An An is so cute and lovely. I hope he can recover soon,” Ho said, adding that he will visit the park again when the panda has recovered.

On Ocean Park’s social media account, over 600 people also left their blessings to An An.

“He is a beautiful panda. I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2018, and he made my 50th birthday so very happy. Hopefully, he is feeling better and meeting many more friends soon,” said Lesley Smart from Australia.
