HONG KONG- Hong Kong Customs seized a record 700 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, with an estimated market value of HK$400 million ($51 million), at the Hong Kong International Airport and in Sheung Shui last month.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the government said the Customs and Excise Department of Hong Kong confiscated the illegal drugs in an an anti-narcotics operation, codenamed "Yunzhan-duanliu", from March 18 to 24.

“This is a record seizure of methamphetamine by Hong Kong Customs. Two men were arrested in the case,” the statement reads.

The operation was conducted in coordination with the Anti-Smuggling Bureau of the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China, the Anti-Smuggling Bureau of the Guangdong Sub-Administration of the GACC, and the Anti-Smuggling Bureau of Shenzhen Customs in March.

Through risk assessment, officers of Hong Kong Customs first inspected an airborne consignment declared as containing transformers that arrived from Mexico on March 18. 

About 447kg of suspected liquid methamphetamine was found concealed inside three huge transformers, the government said.

Following an investigation and intelligence exchange with mainland authorities, Hong Kong Customs searched a logistics warehouse in Sheung Shui on March 24 and found 253kg of suspected methamphetamine in 10 pieces of industrial-use anti-vibratory rubber. The investigation is ongoing.
