HONG KONG – Hot summer weather is expected to persist in Hong Kong in the coming few days with the temperatures set to climb up to 35 degrees Celsius or higher.

The very hot weather warning continues to be in effect on Tuesday as sweltering heat continues to take over the financial hub.

The Hong Kong Observatory has warned of “prolonged heat” on its website, saying that the weather will be persistently very hot over southern China this week to early next week under the dominance of the subtropical ridge.

Local temperatures are expected to climb to 35 degree Celsius between Friday and next Monday, the observatory said, adding that it will be a couple of degrees higher in the New Territories.

In a statement, the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region called on members of the public to avoid prolonged outdoor activities to prevent heat stroke.

“If engaged in outdoor work or activities, wear a wide-brimmed hat and light-colored, loose-fitting clothes. Stay in shaded areas as much as possible,” it added.

Employers should assess the risk of heat stroke to their employees and adopt effective preventive measures such as providing cool drinking water and setting up temporary sunshade, the Labour Department said in a separate statement.
