HONG KONG – After having its hottest month on record, Hong Kong on Thursday was under typhoon signal number 1 as a tropical depression moved over eastern Guangdong.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the Standby Signal Number 1, which was raised over the territory at 10:10 pm on Wednesday, was expected to remain in force until between 2 pm and 4 pm. The Standby Signal meant a tropical cyclone was centered within about 800 kilometers of Hong Kong and may affect the city.

“The threat posed by the tropical depression to the territory is diminishing gradually. The Observatory will consider cancelling all tropical cyclone warning signals between 2 pm and 4 pm today,” the Observatory said in a weather advisory at 11:45 am.

The HKO said the weather in Hong Kong will be cloudy with squally showers and thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at times and there will be swells.

At noon, the tropical depression over eastern Guangdong was estimated to be about 90 kilometers northeast of the city and was forecast to move west-northwest at about 15 kilometers per hour move across Guangdong and weaken gradually.

In a post shared on its verified Facebook account on Aug 1, the HKO said July was the hottest month on record for the city, owing to an unusually strong dominance of the subtropical ridge in southern China.
