HONG KONG – The Hong Kong Observatory raised Standby Signal No 1 on Monday night due to a tropical cyclone in the northern part of the South China Sea.

In a weather bulletin, the Observatory said the tropical depression at 11 pm was estimated to be about 270 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong  and is forecast to move east at about 12 kilometers per hour across the coastal waters of Guangdong.

“The circulation of the tropical depression is rather small. The associated strong winds will keep a distance from Hong Kong tonight and tomorrow morning,” the Observatory said.

The Observatory added that the Standby Signal No 1 will remain in force overnight and occasional showers, squalls, and swells are expectedly in the next few days.
