HONG KONG – The Hong Kong Observatory issued a frost warning on Sunday afternoon as temperatures in parts of the New Territories were expected to drop to as low as 4 degrees Celsius before dawn on Monday.

In an advisory, the Observatory warned farmers and other residents that ground frost was likely to occur early on Monday morning on high ground or in the northern part of the New Territories.

The Centre for Health Protection reminded the public, particularly the elderly and people with chronic illnesses, to adopt appropriate measures to protect their health amid the cold weather.

A spokesman for the CHP said that cold weather can easily trigger or exacerbate diseases.

"Elderly people have less insulating fat beneath their skin to keep them warm and their body temperature control mechanism may be weaker. Their body may not be able to appropriately respond to the cold weather," the spokesman said.
