HONG KONG – The weather in Hong Kong was colder than usual in December, due to a stronger northeast monsoon affecting southern China during the month, the Hong Kong Obsevatory said on Wednesday.

The mean temperature during the month was 16.6 degrees Celsius, 1.6 C below the 1991-2020 normal figure, the observatory said in a statement.

The average daily minimum temperature was 14.4 C, 1.8 C below normal, while the mean daily maximum temperature was 19 C in December, also 1.4 C lower than the normal figure, the HKO said.

In the morning of Dec 18, the temperature at the observatory dropped to a minimum of 9.4 degrees, the lowest of the month, due to an intense winter monsoon over the coast of Guangdong. The HKO issued the strong monsoon signal from Dec 16-18 and the cold weather warning from Dec 16-20.

Meanwhile, the monthly total rainfall was 25.7 millimeters, 3.1 mm below normal, said the HKO, noting that the annual total rainfall of 2,205.4 mm in 2022 was about 9 percent, also below the annual normal of 2,431.2 mm.
