HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s health authorities confirmed on Friday that a 66-year-old man with a history of chronic illnesses had died three days after receiving a BioNTech shot.

The man received the BioNTech vaccine at Lung Sum Avenue Sports Centre Community Vaccination Centre on Tuesday and there was no record of him feeling unwell during observation at the vaccination center

In a press release, a spokesman for the Department of Health said the man, with a history of diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia, was found collapsed in a car on Friday morning. He did not respond to resuscitation after being admitted to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital.

He received the BioNTech vaccine at Lung Sum Avenue Sports Centre Community Vaccination Centre on Tuesday and there was no record of him feeling unwell during observation at the vaccination center, the spokesman said.

The department has immediately contacted the Hospital Authority to obtain further information for investigation and assessment.

It will pass the case to the expert panel on COVID-19 vaccination for causality assessment, and the assessment result will be released in a timely manner, the spokesman said. 

Around 276,600 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Thursday, the government said in a separate release. Around 201,500 of them received the Sinovac vaccine while the remaining received the BioNTech jab.
