HONG KONG – Hong Kong on Saturday recorded 8,060 new coronavirus infections, 501 of which were imported.

The Hospital Authority meanwhile reported that nine COVID-19 patients passed away in public hospitals.

Of Saturday’s new cases, 7,559 were locally acquired – including 1,487 testing positive by nucleic acid tests and the rest found by rapid antigen tests (RATs), according to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health.

Among the imported cases, 241 were found positive for the virus at the Hong Kong International Airport, 173 involved samples taken during day 1 to day 3, while the remaining 87 involved samples during day 4 to day 7.

With Saturday's figure, the running total of virus cases in the city reached 2,028,945, including 1,029,614 confirmed through nucleic acid tests and 999,331 by RATs.

A total of 10,373 death cases that had tested positive for the virus during the fifth wave were recorded as of Saturday.
