HONG KONG – Hong Kong reported 4,988 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday as 13 more infected patients passed away, health authorities said.

The new cases comprised 4,593 local infections and 395 imported cases, the Centre for Health Protection said in a statement.

The CHP said eight residential care homes for the elderly and persons with disabilities had 16 new cases while three secondary schools had to suspend three in-person classes for one week due to infections.

As of Sunday, the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch had identified 208 cases of sub-lineage XBB, six of XBD, eight of BA.2.75.2, seven of BA.4.6, 11 of BF.7 and 29 of BQ.1.1 among imported cases. Eleven cases of sub-lineage XBB, nine of XBD, one of BA.2.75.2 and 19 of BQ.1.1 have also been found among local cases.

In a separate statement, the Hospital Authority said 1,870 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 were being treated in public hospitals, including 164 new patients. 

There were 174 patients requiring oxygen therapy and 10 patients requiring ventilator support, the HA said. 

Thirty-five patients were in critical condition, including 10 receiving intensive care, while 51 were in serious condition, the HA added.
