HONG KONG – Hong Kong logged 4,015 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday with 45 more people succumbing to their infections, the health authorities reported.

The new cases comprised 3,893 local infections and 122 imported ones, according to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health.

With the latest 45 COVID related deaths, the pandemic has claimed 13,010 lives in the city so far, which included 12,797 during the current fifth wave of infections, the Centre for Health Protection said

The city logged 3,793 daily coronavirus infections on Wednesday, 3,843 on Tuesday, 4,653 on Monday, and 6,261 on Sunday.

With the latest 45 COVID related deaths, the pandemic has claimed 13,010 lives in the city so far, which included 12,797 during the current fifth wave of infections, the CHP added.

Total 299 COVID infections, including 256 students and 43 staff members, were identified across 217 schools, according to the CHP.

Also, 14 care homes for the elderly and persons with disabilities reported 17 cases, all residents.

For imported infections involving mutant strains, one more case of BQ.1.1 was identified between Oct 10, 2022 and Jan 19, 2023. For locally acquired cases, one more case of BF.7 and three more of XBB – including two more of XBB.1.5 – were detected.

The CHP said 40.33 percent of specimens verified were linked to the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sub-variants.
