HONG KONG – More than 5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Hong Kong as of Wednesday, according to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.
In a statement on Wednesday night, the government said that about 5,014,300 doses have been administered since the city’s COVID-19 Vaccination Programme began in late February. About 60,700 people received their jabs Wednesday.

Among those given the first dose of vaccines, about 1,172,300 got the Sinovac jab while about 1,750,300 received BioNTech’s vaccine.
For the second dose, about 865,700 residents chose Sinovac’s vaccine, while about 1,226,000 people took BioNTech.
In a separate statement, the government reiterated that data collected by city’s health authorities showed that there is no evidence that vaccination increases the risk of death or miscarriage.

As of July 18, the Department of Health had received 4,361 reports of “adverse events”, the majority of which were relatively minor cases.
Among the death cases concerning persons who had been vaccinated, including 26 cases with inoculation within 14 days before they passed away, none was associated with vaccination.
According to the Hospital Authority, from June 21 to July 18, the ratio of death cases for those without a vaccination record was 70.7 cases for every 100,000 people, while the ratio of death cases for those vaccinated was 2.7 cases for every 100,000 people. The overall death rate is similar to that recorded in the past three years, the HA noted.

Also, the ratio of miscarriages among the unvaccinated was 26.8 cases for every 100,000 people, while the ratio of miscarriage cases for those who had a vaccination record was 4.2 cases for every 100,000 people.
“Based on the statistical analysis of the above figures, there is no evidence that vaccination increases the risk of death or miscarriage for recipients,” the statement reads.
