The first Hong Kong family doctor consulting office was set up in Shenzhen recently, and plans to introduce Hong Kong-certified general practitioners for local services.

The office is located in the Pengwan Community Health Center of Yantian district. The center intends to establish a total of five such facilities, and train 30 general practitioners and 30 community nurses by 2025.

Collaboration in the healthcare sector also came into focus at Shenzhen’s “two sessions” which began on Monday

To further enhance Shenzhen-Hong Kong medical cooperation, the district strives to explore new approaches for cross-boundary commercial insurance settlement and jointly build a Shenzhen-Hong Kong medical consortium with Hong Kong counterparts.

Collaboration in the healthcare sector also came into focus at Shenzhen’s “two sessions” which began on Monday. Tam Chun-kwok, a member of the Shenzhen Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, proposed that recognition of medical personnel from the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions needs to be stepped up to allow them to practice on the Chinese mainland.

“Shenzhen has issued the first 37 certificates for chief physicians, a high rank in the mainland’s official medical system, to Hong Kong doctors. So far, only about 100 Hong Kong physicians with certificates are practicing on the mainland. This is far from being enough,” Tam said.

He suggested that pharmaceutists and nurses should also be included in the policy, and encouraged Hong Kong and Macao doctors to take mainland examinations to qualify as physicians.

Ming Liang, a deputy to the Shenzhen People’s Congress, said more mainland medical institutions should be allowed to introduce Hong Kong-approved drugs and medical devices directly, and the application process should be expedited.
