HONG KONG – Top microbiologist and government adviser Yuen Kwok-yung said Hong Kong has achieved zero untraceable infections for 28 consecutive days and the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the city has ended.

At a press briefing on Saturday, Yuen said the financial hub will likely see a fifth wave and should be prepared.

Hong Kong reported one new imported COVID-19 case on the same day, breaking a two-day streak of zero inflations.

In a statement issued in the afternoon, the Centre for Health Protection said the new case involved a 42-year-old woman from Indonesia. She was asymptomatic and has stayed in Ramada Hong Kong Harbour View hotel in Sai Ying Pun after arriving in the financial hub.

The city’s infection tally stood at 11,837.

A total of 19 cases were reported from May 15 to 28, including five untraceable local infections and one possibly local case, the CHP said.

According to the Hospital Authority, 25 confirmed patients are currently hospitalized in 13 public hospitals and the North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Centre, including one in critical condition.

While meeting the media after attending a radio program Saturday morning, Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan Siu-chee said the government would welcome incentives offered by corporations that can motivate people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Chan was asked about a developer’s move to offer a flat for lucky draw by people who have received the jab.

The health chief emphasized that vaccination is an important intervention to control and prevent the epidemic situation.

The government said some 2.28 million vaccine doses have been administered as of Friday since the rollout of the citywide vaccination program on Feb 26.

Official data showed more than 1.3 million people in Hong Kong have taken at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, with about 966,400 people fully vaccinated.
