The application of digital technologies through remote working, automating business and production processes is increasingly becoming the key to sustaining day-to-day activities amid various social-distancing measures, a global security expert said.
Kelvin Chan Wai-kei, assistant general manager for global security of NEC Hong Kong Ltd, a provider of information, and communications technology and telecommunications network services, said the pandemic has somewhat accelerated the pace of digital transformation in Hong Kong, and the momentum is set to continue.

“After nearly two years of doldrums, especially the worst-ever wave of the pandemic, digital transformation and automation technologies have become essential requirements for industries moving forward,” Chan said.
The application of technologies such as artificial intelligence, internet of things, and 5G is a critical solution for businesses to deal with sudden crises, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, Chan said.

He said that even after the pandemic subsides and the economy returns to normal, digitalization will remain a key role in resuming operations, as well as in preparing for operational risks such as supply-and-demand shocks.
NEC’s high level of digitalization has helped to hedge against the impact of the pandemic on the company’s operations, while at the same time contributing to the growth of its business to some extent, Chan said, adding that the stress the outbreak put on businesses has highlighted the necessity for digital transformation.
Chan expressed optimism about Hong Kong’s future digital transformation. He believes the SAR government has recognized this opportunity and has consciously put more emphasis on technology and innovation in its policy formulation, which has strengthened the atmosphere for private enterprises to undergo technological transformation.

The city’s status as an international financial center, its international business environment, and a range of supportive development measures from the central government have all helped to shape a smooth environment for further digital development, he added.
