The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China will guide the “one country, two systems” principle to new heights in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, said at a Monday session held by the office to promote a better understanding of the congress.

Xia, who chaired the session, called the weeklong congress, which ended on Saturday, a “historic milestone”. It elected the new-term leadership of the Party’s Central Committee led by General Secretary Xi Jinping. The decisions made and the results achieved at the congress will play an important role in guiding and ensuring the nation’s modernization, its great rejuvenation, and the new victory of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Xia said.

Xia said the report to the Party’s 20th National Congress has summarized the achievements of the “one country, two systems” principle, especially Hong Kong's landmark transition from chaos to order. The report also expounded the new strategy of adhering to and improving the significant principle, providing fundamental guidance for the work of Hong Kong and Macao in the new era of development, Xia added.

To ensure the implementation of the guidelines directed by the Party Congress, it’s necessary to comprehensively, accurately and unwaveringly implement the principles of “one country, two systems” and “patriots administering Hong Kong”, support the SAR government’s law-based administration, leverage Hong Kong’s advantages to develop its economy and tackle deep-rooted livelihood issues, and unite all forces at home and abroad to secure the city’s long-term stability and prosperity, Xia said.

Xia also said that deepening the society’s understanding of the essence of the Party Congress will be a priority. Related departments should actively carry out various promotion activities in Hong Kong in an easy-to-understand manner, enabling more members of the Hong Kong community to have a good command of the essence of the Party Congress.
