HONG KONG – Hong Kong recorded 4,653 new COVID infections on Monday, as 50 more COVID patients passed away, the city’s health authorities reported.

The new cases included 4,529 local infections and 124 imported ones. The city added 6,261 daily coronavirus infections on Sunday, 7,749 on Saturday, and 8,260 the day before, data show.

The newly added 50 deaths took the city’s toll to 12,863 so far, including 12,650 during the current wave of infections, said the Centre for Health Protection (CHP)

According to the CHP, 19 care homes for the elderly and persons with disabilities reported 24 COVID cases altogether – all residents.

The center said that 1,137 students and 187 staff members from 631 schools were infected with COVID-19, leading to the suspension of one class.

As of Monday, the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch (PHLSB) had identified no new COVID cases linked mutant strains, said the CHP.

The CHP added that 43.3 percent (the seven-day moving average) of specimens verified by the PHLSB from Jan 7 to Jan 13 were linked to the BA.4 or BA.5 Omicron sub-variant.
