HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s health authorities on Thursday reported 2,401 new COVID-19 cases as 28 infected patients passed away.

The new cases comprised 2,337 locally acquired infections and 64 imported ones, according to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH).

With Thursday's deaths, the city’s toll since the start of the pandemic stood at 13,258, the Centre for Health Protection said

Thursday marked the second day of the city’s daily coronavirus infections increased after a continuous downtrend. The city recorded 2,295 infections on Wednesday, slightly up from 1,987 on Tuesday, and 2,271 on Monday.

Across the city, eight residential care homes for the elderly and persons with disabilities disabled recorded 11 infections involving nine residents and two staff members, the CHP said.

The CHP added that 36.98 percent of new specimens verified since Oct 10, 2022 had been linked to the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sub-variants.

Nineteen schools also reported 26 new cases affecting 19 students and seven employees.
