HONG KONG – The Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has firmly rejected and condemned the irresponsible remarks made by high-ranking officials of some Western countries on the election of the seventh-term Legislative Council (LegCo) of the HKSAR.

The remarks by the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) countries and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy smeared the Chinese central authorities' policy towards Hong Kong and the law-based governance of the HKSAR government, and grossly interfered in China's internal affairs including Hong Kong affairs.

Facts have proved that Hong Kong's electoral system improved by the central authorities is effective, the spokesperson said, adding that the central authorities will continue to steer the course for the development of democracy in Hong Kong and support this endeavor, and will continue to resolutely uphold the fundamental interests of all Hong Kong people.

The spokesperson said that Hong Kong people are seeking stability, tranquility and security, and they hope Hong Kong will get rid of the quagmire of pan-politicization with the efforts of the able who love the country and Hong Kong.

The spokesperson pointed out that Western-style democracy has many deficiencies, but instead of self-examination, some countries shifted blame to others and imposed their own flawed institutional models on others, which did not bring democracy to other countries and regions, but misery to the people there.

Their group political grandstanding cannot twist the fair-judgment of Hong Kong people on merits of matters, their misleading words cannot change the sincerity and achievements of the central authorities in supporting the development of democracy in Hong Kong, and their disruption cannot stop Hong Kong from developing quality democracy in line with its reality, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson stressed that China's democracy should be decided by the Chinese people, and the democracy path Hong Kong takes and the electoral system it implements should fit Hong Kong's conditions and they are purely China's internal affairs.

"China is unswerving in its commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests," the spokesperson said, noting that any external interference will prove to be futile in front of the strong will of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots.
