China Daily senior reporter Luo Weiteng scooped the “Best Business Reporter of the Year” prize at the annual business news awards competition organized by Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK).

Luo, who entered journalism nearly seven years ago, bagged the award for her insights and in-depth analysis contained in three articles – a feature taking a sober look at the boom-to-burst tale of streaming e-commerce on the Chinese mainland, a data journalism project focusing on the “homecoming” journey of overseas-listed mainland enterprises as well as a behind-the-scenes story of the journey cities like Dongguan have taken to create healthier urbanization as a cure for the delicate relationship between the city government and less-educated, unskilled migrants in the post-pandemic era.

The award ceremony was cancelled for the second year running due to the coronavirus pandemic. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, who has presented the awards for the past three years, congratulated the winners via a video message.

“At a historic turning point of technology adoption and industry revolution, business news reporting is playing a vital role in offering comprehensive, professional and cross-industry insights and analysis for companies and helping them make the right, visionary business decisions,” Chan said.

Luo said, “The year of 2020 was far from ordinary for the world on all fronts. In times of uncertainty and challenge, there is an ever-more urgent need for journalists to take our profession seriously. Being honored at business journalism awards in such an extraordinary year means a lot to me.”
