Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the city still needs to stay alert to national security threats and dangers amid uncertainties in the global political and economic situation. He vowed to further strengthen the city’s national security protection through law enforcement, public education, and overseas promotion.

Lee made the remarks on Wednesday at the “International Communication Forum: Towards a fairer, safer world”, which was jointly organized by Friday Culture Ltd and the Hong Kong Coalition amidst a typhoon signal No 8.

Making a keynote speech at the event, Lee said although Hong Kong has been back on the right course of “one country, two systems”, the city should not lower its guard on safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests.

He said that law enforcement agencies in Hong Kong will investigate seriously and take action against anyone endangering national security. Lee also discussed the importance of strengthening public education and providing publicity of national security and national awareness issues, saying it will greatly enhance Hong Kong people’s resilience to the instigation or incitement by forces with ulterior motives.

“We will encourage schools to review the curricula and organize national education activities. Teachers are required to uphold professional conduct. The youth uniformed groups of disciplined services will be given dedicated training. … All these aim to nurture a generation of law-abiding residents,” he said.

Lee continued to say that the key to telling a good Hong Kong story and safeguarding national security is to dispel misconceptions about Hong Kong among overseas people and to counter fake news. The HKSAR government will react robustly to the wrong information, he said.

The high-level forum on international communication invited various government officials, business leaders and legal experts to share their insights through online and offline channels. It set two panel discussions, respectively on “Achieving fairness in a polarized world” and “Safety, from individual to global perspectives”.
