Twenty-two universities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have been ranked in the top 1,000 universities worldwide.

Fourteen universities from Guangdong province were on the top 1,000 list and 13 of them are from cities in the Greater Bay Area

The 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities was released on Sunday by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. The annual publication is regarded as one of the three most influential listings of world university rankings, along with QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Fourteen universities from Guangdong province were on the top 1,000 list and 13 of them are from cities in the Greater Bay Area. The list also includes seven higher institutions in Hong Kong and two in Macao.

The seven Hong Kong universities that made it included The Chinese University of Hong Kong which ranked 101-150, The University of Hong Kong (101-150), the City University of Hong Kong (151-200), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (151-200), The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (201-300), the Hong Kong Baptist University (801-900), and The Education University of Hong Kong (801-900).

The two universities from Macao were the University of Macau (401-500) and the Macau University of Science and Technology (601-700).

Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou made its first-ever appearances in the Top 100. In total, seven Chinese universities are listed among the top 100 worldwide.

Foshan University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen made into the top-1,000 list for the first time.

Harvard University has been ranked first globally for 19 consecutive years. Stanford University and Cambridge University fetched the second and the third spots respectively this year.

ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and employees winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the volume of articles published in the journals Nature and Science; and the quantity of highly cited researchers and articles.
