Seven speakers from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region are among the more than 500 students competing in the “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition National Finals held in Chengdu, Sichuan province, which started on Sunday and runs through Wednesday. 

Because of the pandemic, the speakers from Hong Kong will join the contest via video conferencing. They are taking part in five categories including primary, secondary schools and university levels. 

Christina Wong Man-yan from St. Paul’s Co-educational College and Charmaine Wu Sum-ching from Diocesan Girls’ School secured their places in the final of the “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition to be held on Wednesday

On Monday, three finalists representing Hong Kong SAR competed in the semifinals of the Junior Secondary category. The competition included a prepared speech on “Saving food, saving the world”, an impromptu speech, and a Q&A session from the judging panel.

Christina Wong Man-yan from St. Paul’s Co-educational College and Charmaine Wu Sum-ching from Diocesan Girls’ School successfully secured their places in the final to be held on Wednesday. They will deliver a prepared speech on the topic “The promise of youth”, an impromptu speech, and answer questions from the judging panel.

Gladys Wong Ying-chun received second prize award out of tens of contestants in the semifinals. 

On Tuesday, three more contestants from the Hong Kong SAR will be competing in the semifinals of the Senior Secondary category and the University category, and the final round of the Senior Primary category, respectively.
