HONG KONG – A 59-year-old man was killed after a taxi drove into a pedestrian island in Tai Po on Sunday morning.

Police said 9 persons were injured in the incident, including five women and three men. The taxi driver, who also felt unwell, was arrested, local media reported.

The incident happened along Kwong Fuk Road after 11 am. One of the injured was a pregnant woman who was rescued from under the taxi.

The incident caused traffic congestion in the area with photos shared on social media showing ambulances and an overturned traffic light.

Secretary for Transport and Housing Frank Chan Fan said in a statement he was deeply saddened by the accident and extended his sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and the injured, and wished the injured speedy recovery. 

He said relevant government departments have followed up and rendered assistance to the families concerned, and the police will investigate the cause of the accident.
